How 8-year-old Ruby McLellan became Australia's youngest home owner

Move over, monopoly tycoons and pretend princes of pretend kingdoms – meet Ruby McLellan, the pint-sized powerhouse who's rewriting the rules of real estate and giving the term "property ladder" a literal twist.

That's right: Ruby is just eight years old and already owns a four-bedroom house. Meanwhile, most of us can barely find matching socks in the morning.

Now, before you start picturing a tiny landlord with a playhouse adorned with "No Girls Allowed" signs, let's delve into Ruby's remarkable tale of fiscal responsibility and pocket money prowess.

While most kids her age were still trying to figure out if they preferred chocolate or strawberry milk, Ruby was busy checking out property market trends and crunching numbers like a seasoned Wall Street mogul. With the help of her siblings, Angus (14) and Lucy (13), Ruby pooled their collective pocket money - a grand total of $6000 - to secure a deposit for their first property. Their weapon of choice? Not lemonade stands or tooth fairy funds, but good old-fashioned hard work and frugality. The result? A four-bedroom home in Clyde, southeast of Melbourne, bought by the McLellan kids for $671,000.

Their dad, Cam McLellan, CEO of a property investment company, guided them through the labyrinth of real estate jargon, teaching them about positive gearing and growth corridors. While other kids were learning their times tables, Ruby was calculating potential rental yields. Talk about a head start in life!

And while their friends were blowing their allowances on the latest toys and gadgets, these pint-sized property moguls were saying no to impulse buys and yes to long-term investments. It's like they were born with calculators instead of rattles.

Now, you might be wondering, what's next for these mini-magnates? Well, they plan to hold onto their property until Lucy and Angus hit their early 20s, ensuring they've waited through one full "growth property cycle". After that, it's off to the races, with hopes that their humble abode will fetch a cool million bucks.

But Ruby's not stopping there. She's already asking about tax implications and property sales, proving that she's got the brains to match her business acumen. Who needs a lemonade stand when you can have a diversified investment portfolio?

So, while most kids are busy mastering Fortnite dances or perfecting their TikTok routines, Ruby McLellan is out here making moves in the property market. Who knows? Maybe one day we'll all be renting from her property empire.

But just remember, when you're paying rent to an eight-year-old landlord, be sure to pay on time. Late fees might include extra homework assignments or a mandatory bedtime story session. Hey, it's all in the lease agreement...

Image: The Today Show

Huge win for Ruby Princess passengers

The passengers of the ill-fated Ruby Princess cruise ship voyage in 2020 have won a class action lawsuit against Carnival Cruise Lines, after a judge determined it was negligent for the voyage to commence.

More than 2,600 passengers were onboard the vessel when the ship left from Sydney for a 13-night journey around New Zealand, before an outbreak of Covid-19 forced the cruise ship to turn around.

Almost 700 people tested positive to the virus and were held onboard, which results in 28 Covid deaths.

The lawsuit alleged that Carnival, which chartered the ship, and its owner/operator Princess Cruise Lines, breached duties of care and Australian Consumer Law.

On Wednesday, Justice Angus Stewart found that the cruise company was negligent in certain respects with regard to the precautions taken for passenger safety.

He also found the company made misleading representations in pre-holiday communications with passengers, including by suggesting it was "reasonably safe" to take the cruise at the beginning of the pandemic.

The class action lawsuit began in October 2022 after two long years of preparation, and ran for five weeks.

Susan Karpik was the lead applicant in the class action seeking damages arising from a breach of the consumer guarantees and negligence by the cruise company.

In a statement issued by Shine Lawyers on Wednesday, Ms Karpik said she was “pleased with the outcome” but that it was only a “partial win”.

“It’s of course only a partial win as 28 lives were lost on this cruise,” she said.

“There are many individuals and families who will never recover from this loss.”

Shine Lawyers Joint Head of Class Actions Vicky Antzoulatos, who ran the case said, “today is a warning for cruise companies to put passengers ahead of profits.

“Carnival should now do the right thing and compensate all the passengers rather than prolong the matter through further litigation,” she said.

"Roo-jitsu": Former cop fends off 2m-tall kangaroo trying to drown his dog

In an unusual and somewhat comical turn of events, a former Victorian police officer, Mick Moloney, recently found himself in a rather unexpected altercation with a kangaroo while out walking his dogs near the Murray River.

The story, as bizarre as it sounds, unfolded last Sunday when Moloney's peaceful stroll took a dramatic twist, involving an agitated kangaroo, one of his beloved dogs, and an heroic rescue mission.

Moloney, a resident of Mildura, was no stranger to the area and had often enjoyed leisurely walks along the scenic Murray River with his canine companions. On this particular day, his dogs were noticeably quieter than usual as they strolled by the water's edge. It wasn't until "Hutchy", one of Moloney's dogs, went missing that he began to sense something was amiss.

Describing his dogs as "always in the water," the former policeman began to suspect that the tranquil riverbanks might be harbouring an unexpected visitor. And his suspicions were soon confirmed when he laid eyes on an agitated kangaroo standing in the river, his arms submerged, and his gaze locked onto Moloney.

What unfolded next was an extraordinary encounter between man and marsupial, captured on camera and later shared widely online. In the video, Moloney can be heard demanding that the kangaroo release Hutchy from its grip.

Despite attempts to scare the kangaroo away, the situation escalated as the roo retaliated by striking Moloney and sending his phone plunging into the water. This unexpected punch-up left Moloney with a few scratches and a sore forearm, but both he and Hutchy ultimately made it safely to the riverbank.

Moloney shared the video on his Facebook page, where it quickly went viral, garnering hundreds of shares and reactions. The bizarre incident even led to some humorous commentary, with people joking about "roo-jitsu" and the unexpected martial arts showdown with the kangaroo.

Moloney, who is a mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu teacher, emphasised that he did not intend to be cruel to the kangaroo, highlighting his love for animals. Despite the unexpected turn of events, he expressed that he has no plans to change his walking route along the river, suggesting that he and his dogs will continue using their favourite walking spot.

As Moloney playfully put it, "My tussling with roo days are pretty much done though, cause that thing was strong. Let's just call it a draw." The bizarre incident serves as a reminder that encounters with wildlife can take unexpected turns, even in the most picturesque of settings, and that sometimes, a little humour can help us cope with life's quirks and oddities.

Images: Tiktok

Aussie ranger's hilarious response to tourist's roo-diculous question

An Aussie ranger has shared a hilarious tongue-in-cheek response to a tourist's misguided question.

Wildlife ranger Croc Turnbull took to TikTok to share the question he was sent by a man planning to travel Down under with his girlfriend, who asked if the couple could rent and ride a kangaroo while on their holiday.

The ranger took the opportunity to hit the tourist with some classic Aussie sarcasm, with his response quickly going viral.

"Yes, you can ride them," Croc said while sporting an Akubra. "The thing is though mate, you need to be an experienced rider".

The crocodile wrangler casually and methodically explained the dangers associated with "riding a roo" and the different types of riding licences.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Steve Turnbull (@croc.tails)

"Once you're experienced you can just hold on with one hand, then you've got a free hand to check your phone or drink your beer."

Many flocked to the comments debating whether the tourist's "scary" question was real, while the ranger explained he had been asked far worse questions during his career.

"Mate I get all sorts of weird questions, you would be surprised what tourists ask me," he told Yahoo News Australia. "Do roos run down the main street? Does the sun rise in the west in the southern hemisphere?"

"It's amazing what you can make people believe if you keep a straight face and chuck a few big words in."

Croc's convincing delivery and detailed response has won over thousands of Aussies who jumped in on the joke in the TikTok video's comment section.

"My kangaroo licence was suspended for riding whilst intoxicated," one Aussie joked, while another complained about the unsuccessful launch of "Roober" in cities.

Tourism Australia's new mascot targeted by animal rights activists

Tourism Australia has seen all kinds of ambassadors campaigning to bring travellers to Aussie shores.

Names such as Paul Hogan, Lara Bingle and Kylie Minogue have all been the face of Australian tourism, but the latest ambassador aimed at boosting travellers Down Under is the ever-charming, yet computer-generated, Ruby Roo.

Ruby Roo is part of Tourism Australia's push to attract people back to Aussie shores as the nation continues to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

While the CGI mascot has received a mostly positive welcome online, animal rights activist are not happy, calling out the government's "hypocrisy" over their choice in animal to represent Australia.

"If Tourism Australia's Brand Ambassador Ruby Roo was real, she would have been shot as part of a Government 'Kangaroo Management Plan' and hung up by her leg on the back of a ute," NSW Animal Justice Party MP Mark Pearson said.

Speaking to 2GB's Ben Fordham, Pearson said "if the tourism industry is going to have the icon as our signature to the world, then talk about what are we actually doing to kangaroos".

"We can't keep saying, 'Oh my god, we're overrun with kangaroos' because they've been here for millions of years - they're trying to survive," he said.

"We don't know how many kangaroos are out there but this is our native, protected animal, we need to be absolutely certain of how many kangaroos are out there (before we kill them).

"This animal is loved around the world."

The Australian government estimated there are between 40 and 50 million kangaroos across the country, almost double the nation's population of people.

Due to their grazing habits, they've been considered a detrimental pest by some farmers and culling, though controversial, does occur across the country, with certain legal circumstances permitting the shooting of the animal.

But Pearson insisted we need to "work with these animals" and not against them.

"We need to work with these animals, it's not a competition between a cow and a sheep and a kangaroo," he said.

"We're talking about killing kangaroos now and we've been killing kangaroos for 250 years.

"If the agriculture industry is saying we've still got a problem then the methodology which is just killing and maiming animals is not working."

Animals Australia Director of Development Louise Bonomi echoed Pearson's sentiment.

"Tourism Australia using a kangaroo as its 'face' of tourism is the equivalent of Japan adopting a whale as its tourism icon or Canada marketing itself using harp seal images," she said.

Couple who caught coronavirus on Ruby Princess “can’t wait to cruise again”

Heartbroken son speaks out after Ruby Princess cruise ship death: “We’re just extremely mad”

The Ruby Princess cruise ship quickly became a coronavirus hotspot with deadly consequences after eleven passengers passed away.

Tasmanian man, 81-year-old Leonard Fisher was one of the victims who lost his life to the virus after boarding the cruise ship and his heartbroken son, Greg has spoken up about the horrific ordeal.

Speaking to 60 minutes, Greg said he wished he’d done more to convince his father out of leaving for his trip but his dad convinced him that if there had been anything wrong on the ship, Princess Cruises would have cancelled the cruise.

"He said at my age, I'll probably never get a chance to do another trip like this again," Greg told Bartlett.

However, as time went on Greg noticed his dad become increasingly more concerned throughout his trip.

"He said that he had a gentleman sitting beside him that was coughing and coughing, and coughing, he had his hand over his mouth, and he was quite concerned about that," Greg told 60 Minutes.

"He did say that if he was aware that how bad this virus was, and if it was on the ship, he would never have got on the ship."

Greg told Channel 9 both he and his dad had trusted the cruise line company as "At no stage were the passengers told that there was a possibility of coronavirus on that boat. They were unaware of any sickness that was on that boat, it was just so wrong,"

Np passengers were told that in fact, 104 people on board were sick with respiratory infections and 15 had to be swabbed by the doctor onboard due to his fear of suspected COVID-19.

Cruise passengers Gary and Kelly Callaghan expressed their frustrations that they were not warned that the disease had made its way on to the ship.

"We are extremely mad, sad and cranky that we weren't told that somebody potentially had it on the ship. We're just extremely mad that we weren't told anything," she said.

Neither Kelly or Gary were tested upon departure but instead were ushered quickly off the ship and were allowed to return into their communities and back to their homes.

It is possible thousands were infected.

"We were all expecting to be tested when we got off just to be sure, to be safe, you're letting us out in the public around people and nobody tested us and I really think that was disgraceful," Gary said.

NSW Health deemed that the ship was a “low risk setting”, despite being told there were 15 passengers who had been swabbed for coronavirus.

2700 passengers were disembarked without being tested.

There are 600 cases of coronavirus linking back to the ruby cruise ship and 11 deaths.

The Ruby Princess is now the largest single source of COVID-19 deaths in Australia.

COVID-19 warning: Nine cruise ships floating offshore could “flood our system”

Police are urging foreign cruise ships floating off the NSW coast to sail home rather than risk flooding the state’s hospitals with coronavirus patients.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller on Tuesday said there were a total of nine ships either docked in NSW or waiting off the coast.

“There are thousands of people, potentially, in cruise ships off our coasts that aren’t members of our state and if we take them in, then that could well flood our system unnecessarily,” Fuller said.

“All the hard work we've done could be over. We will continue to allow them to have fuel and food ... but it is time to go to your port of origin.”

The call came after the operator of the Ruby Princess cruise ship, which has been linked to hundreds of coronavirus cases, asked the government to allow the company to repatriate its foreign crew “on compassionate and humanitarian grounds”.

Carnival Australia said it was “in high-level federal and state discussions with the aim of enabling the repatriation”.

“It is not safe for the ship to sail away from Australia while there are crew members on board who are ill,” the company said in a statement.

“While illness on board has been reduced due to strong health management, the ship needs to remain within reach of Australia to access healthcare services if an urgent need arises.”

The ship has 1,100 crew from 51 countries, AAP reported.

The Ruby Princess cruise ship has been linked to 10 per cent of Australia’s coronavirus cases, The Guardian reported. As of Monday, at least 440 passengers across the country had tested positive for COVID-19 after disembarking from the ship, which docked twice in Sydney in March.

NSW has banned all cruise ship passengers from disembarking until new policies are in place. The state will continue to let people disembark cruise ships on humanitarian grounds under Fuller’s personal approval, such as the three crew members with severe symptoms who were taken to hospital on Sunday night.

COVID-19 blame game: Who’s really at fault for the Ruby Princess fiasco

The Australian Border Force has laid blame on New South Wales Health for the mishandling of the Ruby Princess arrival in Sydney.

Michael Outram, the ABF’s commissioner stated it was not the border control’s responsibility to extend health checks.

The NSW government however has insisted it is the federal authorities who are to blame after they categorised the cruise ship carrying 2,700 people as “low risk”.

The release of the passengers resulted in a major wave of 133 infections into Australian communities.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Cruisedaily (@cruisedaily) on Aug 18, 2019 at 12:12pm PDT

The catastrophic mistake has resulted in politicians expressing outrage over the systematic failure to isolate the Ruby Princess passengers and its crew.

The ship docked in Sydney on March 19 and it had three passengers and one crew member who displayed flu-like symptoms and had been swabbed.

One passenger had been taken to hospital by via ambulance and passed away due to COVID-19.

However, passengers were allowed to disembark and make their way home, which included overseas flights.
